Jersey care guide
Jersey is a type of knitted fabric used to make T-shirts, loungewear, long-sleeved tops and more. It’s soft, stretchy and comfortable and is usually made from cotton, wool or synthetic blends.
How to iron jersey
Jersey clothing shouldn’t need to be ironed. If you do need to iron it, you should turn your clothes inside out, iron using a medium heat setting and apply steam.
How to wash jersey
You should wash jersey clothes in cool water. Turn embellished or patterned jersey clothing inside out and avoid mixing bright colours and whites in the wash as the colours might bleed. Don’t over-fill your washing machine - this will create creases in the jersey, and it might not be cleaned properly.
How to dry jersey
Using a tumble dryer can shrink jersey fabric. If possible, you should gently pull jersey clothes into shape and dry them flat. You can dry jersey clothing on a washing line, just make sure to keep it in its original shape. Put T-shirts on clothes hangers before hanging them on the line - this will also help to remove any creases.
How to mend jersey
You can stitch up small holes by turning the piece of clothing inside out and sewing across the hole with small stitches and a matching thread. Try not to pull your stitches too big or tight – this will make the fabric pucker and draw attention to the hole.
For best results, you can also mend jersey clothing with a stretch stitch – this mimics the fabric’s knitted structure. Although this method will take a bit of practice to perfect, it will camouflage the hole better.
