Behind the design

The collection

Our new scented candle range is based on the four happy chemicals in the brain - dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins. ‘We wanted to encapsulate the feelings of these chemicals in fragrance form,’ explains Home & Gift Buyer, Alice Fenner. ‘After the fragrance houses presented initial scents in response to our brief, we chatted to the team to see if they got a sense of what feelings each fragrance evokes.’

The packaging has a more informative look, with bold typography and a UV finish on a neutral cream background. ‘The vessels are a very new look for us,’ says Natalie Tupper, one of our Senior Home & Gift Designers. ‘The bright, pearlised finish is colour-matched to each feeling - pink for love, blue for feel-good, green for the outdoors and orange for holidays.’

The scents

Oxytocin: the love hormone The hormone that promotes loving feelings of closeness and connection. Top notes of saffron and bitter almond combine with amber and Egyptian jasmine, underpinned with cedarwood and musk. Serotonin: the mood balancer The chemical created in the brain that regulates your mood. Top notes of bergamot and cardamom are layered with orange blossom and orris fusion, underpinned with cedarwood, sandalwood, papyrus and warm amber. Endorphin: the mood lifter The happy chemical naturally created in the body that is said to relieve pain and lift your mood. Fresh, green top notes blend into fruity pomegranate, fig, rose and peach, softened with woody musk and sweet amber. Dopamine: the feel-good one The rewarding feel-good chemical released in the body, activating feelings of pleasure. Top notes of bergamot and black pepper combine with patchouli and cedarwood, layered with amber, leather and musk. While these candles do not contain any mood-enhancing chemicals, the fragrances have been thoughtfully selected to mimic the feel-good effects that each chemical releases.
